Your existing garbage, recycling and/or food waste containers belong to you. There are a number of creative and environmentally friendly ways to repurpose used garbage/ recycling/ food waste containers and keep them out of the landfill, such as:
extra storage for tools, potting soil, mulch, yard waste
animal feed storage
DIY potato/ carrot planter
collect your depot items (i.e. film plastic, glass, foam packaging or refundables)

WE HEARD YOU! Collection of Used Collection Containers November 1 to 30, 2020
During the automated cart selection period between September to December 2019, a number of residents expressed interest in the RDN coordinating the collection and recycling of the used garbage, recycling and/or food waste containers following the issuance of the new RDN automated carts.
Between November 1 to 30, 2020, if you do not want to or are not able to repurpose your used collection containers, RDN residents will be able to get rid of their used collection containers in one of the two following ways - please note, containers must be CLEAN and FREE OF WASTE:
Option 1 - Drop Off at Approved RDN Disposal Facilities - November 1 to 30
Residents can drop off CLEAN used garbage, recycling and/or food waste containers at either the RDN Church Road Transfer Station (860 Church Road, Parksville) or the RDN Regional Landfill (1105 Cedar Road, Nanaimo) during regular operating hours free of charge. Please note, the free drop off only applies to the used waste containers; if you are bringing other waste to the facilities, standard tipping rates will apply.
Option 2 - Curbside Pickup - November 16 to 27
Residents will have two opportunities to set out their CLEAN used garbage, recycling and/or food waste containers for pickup at curbside the day AFTER your regularly scheduled collection day.
