Acknowledging that these lands and waters have been home to Indigenous peoples since time immemorial, the Regional District of Nanaimo affirms its commitment to respecting the history, traditions and cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples and to listening, learning, and working together to create opportunities for a stronger and more resilient region for everyone.
Principles of reconciliation are at the heart of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Report, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. The Regional District of Nanaimo’s approach to reconciliation is grounded in these principles, and in the values of equity and inclusivity.
