In 2021, the Government of Canada designated September 30 of each year as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour First Nations, Inuit and Métis residential school survivors, their families and communities, and to ensure that public commemoration of the legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of reconciliation. This is a historic day for reflection, listening and learning.
On September 30, in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and the legacy of residential schools in Canada, the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) will fly flags at half-mast at the administration building, recreation facilities and Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department firehall and place orange t-shirt decals on all RDN fleet vehicles including transit buses and fire trucks. We encourage all to wear orange to honour residential school survivors, to take part in in-person or virtual events, and to learn about the history of residential schools and the mandate of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at nctr.ca.
