Zoning Change Supports Bowser Seniors Housing

On April 23, 2019 the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Board of Directors approved a zoning amendment in continued support of future growth in the Bowser Village for the Bowser Seniors Housing project in accordance with the Electoral Area H Official Community Plan (OCP).

Zoning on the parcel where the Bowser Seniors Housing Society is located was approved in December of 2018. The zoning bylaw required that the housing facility be connected to the soon-to-be constructed community sewer system. The change to the zoning was needed as a result of the discontinuation of the Bowser Village Centre Sewer Servicing Project earlier this month. Connection to a community sewer system is no longer an option and an amendment is required to allow the seniors housing development to proceed.

The zoning change will allow the seniors housing facility to use an on-site wastewater disposal system. This is the only change to the zone. No other regulations in the zone are changing.

The Bowser Seniors Housing Society has been working to develop much-needed seniors housing in the Bowser area for several years now. The site on Pitt Road is identified in the OCP. The land will be leased from the Province and funding has been provided by BC Housing. The change to the zoning will allow the project to proceed.
