French Creek Estuary Nature Preserve

French Creek Estuary Nature Preserve

The French Creek Estuary Nature Preserve is a 23-acre conservation property located in Electoral Area G. This Community Park is jointly owned by the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) and the BC Parks Foundation, and is managed by the RDN. The French Creek Estuary Nature Preserve protects a key estuarine ecosystem on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

The nature preserve features a mosaic of freshwater wetlands, relic creek channels, and mature Coastal Douglas-fir forest. These habitats support a wide range of wildlife, including bald eagles, blue heron, salmon, and migratory birds. The estuary is a vital stopover for migrating birds and provides spawning and rearing habitat for fish species.

Park Management Plan

The nature preserve is guided by a management plan that outlines strategies for conservation, restoration, and public engagement. It focuses on prioritizing environmental preservation while allowing the community to experience the area's natural values.

The vision for the French Creek Estuary Nature Preserve is to:

  • Protect and restore sensitive ecosystems.
  • Provide low-impact access for nature appreciation and education.
  • Foster community stewardship through partnerships and volunteerism.

This vision was shaped through collaboration with BC Parks Foundation and local conservation groups including the Save Estuary Lands Society, Friends of French Creek Conservation Society, Arrowsmith Naturalists, Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute, and Mid Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society.
