The Ways of Water

The bridges along the River Walk trail cross a side channel of the Millstone River. The Millstone is 14 kilometres long, beginning at Brannen Lake and draining into Nanaimo harbour. The Millstone watershed is home to many animals such as mammals, bats, songbirds, migratory waterfowl, amphibians, trout and salmon. There are images of a northern red-legged frog and coho salmon on this sign.
Many streams draining into the Millstone River are seasonal. The side channel under this bridge is usually dry in the summer, and its flow is impacted by the irrigation of crops in the surrounding farms. The map on the right-hand side of the sign shows the boundaries of the Millstone River watershed and the lakes and creeks that drain into the Millstone River.
