Anders and Dorrit's Community Park
Audio Narration
Transcript
Thanks to the adventurous and nature-loving couple, Anders and Dorrit Olesen, this land became a community park in February 2012. The property was thoroughly enjoyed by the Olesens, with farm animals, beautiful gardens, views of Mount Benson and the Millstone River meandering through the southern corner. Upon their passing, the Olesens gifted the property to the Regional District of Nanaimo for all to enjoy as a public park.
Anders, a former horticulturist, had a passion for unique trees and lush gardens. Much of the original garden, including the grape vine and specialty trees, continue to flourish here today. In fact, special care was taken to protect and preserve the original plants during the park improvements.
Dorrit found passion in seeing as many of the world’s unique animals and ecosystems with her own eyes. As you explore the park, take some time to appreciate the special plants and natural ecosystems that thrive here. The main thing you need is the inspiration, the will power and the attitude, Dorrit Olesen, as quoted in an article about her worldly travels in the travel section of January 29, 1998 Nanaimo Daily News.
