Annual Reports and Monitoring

Annual Report and Monitoring

To ensure the Regional District of Nanaimo is making progress reaching the goals of the Regional Growth Strategy (RGS) progress is routinely monitored and reported on. Below is the general process of the RGS:

1. The RGS establishes region-wide sustainability goals

2. Targets are set for the desired level of performance linked to each goal

3. Monitoring and reporting are completed using indicators to determine progress for each target

4. The plan and reports are evaluated to assess what is working

5. The plan is updated and revised based on reports and implementation priorities

Monitoring

The RGS monitoring program measures progress towards or away from the goals and policies of the RGS. To do so, the program looks at specific, consistent indicators and targets. This monitoring is critical to assessing the effectiveness of policies and the need to adjust actions.

The indicators and targets used for monitoring were selected through various consultations. The public, member municipalities, provincial agencies and the RDN Board of Directors all provided input on these indicators. 22 indicators and related targets were selected to measure the region's progress towards the goals of the RGS. The RDN regularly updates these indicators as new information becomes available.

Annual Reports

The results of the monitoring program are publicly shared each year with the release of the RGS Annual Report. These reports look at what work has been completed to move us towards the goals set out in the RGS. To so, these reports include quantitative data and descriptions of actions taken by the RDN and the member municipalities.

Since the RGS was adopted in 1997, there have been 18 annual reports. A major review of the RGS was completed in 2007 to 2011. A public library of these reports is available below.
