Superintendent, Wastewater Operations

ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Manager, Wastewater Services, the Superintendent, Wastewater Operations is responsible for the effective operations of the Department’s Wastewater facilities, primarily serving the RDN northern communities and associated wastewater treatment plants and pump stations. 

This role is based at the French Creek Pollution Control Centre in Parksville. The Superintendent manages, plans, coordinates, and reviews the operations of the Department’s facilities and conveyance systems, coordinates and manages wastewater operational staff to ensure safe work practices, procedures and regulations are followed, and monitors processes to ensure regulatory and environmental compliance requirements are met for all wastewater facilities. 

This position leads operational staff to achieve the strategic and operational goals of the RDN Board by managing the Wastewater Services programs, facilities, and personnel, including operation and asset management of the department’s facilities and the operational permits required for those facilities. 

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will bring strong leadership skills, a commitment to health and safety work practices and good judgement. The preferred candidate will hold an Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) Class 3 or 4 certificate in Wastewater Treatment; an undergraduate degree or diploma in biology, chemistry or related field; significant safety training and safety leadership in an industrial setting; with seven (7) years of job-related experience including a minimum of five (5) years in a supervisory capacity.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

POSITION DETAILS
The salary for this position is $111,408 - $127,877 annually and is supplemented by a competitive total compensation plan. Candidates must reside within 30 minutes of the French Creek Pollution Control Centre in Parksville.

Laboratory Technician

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a permanent full-time Laboratory Technician with Wastewater Services based at the French Creek Pollution Control Centre (FCPCC). 

The Laboratory Technician contributes to the effective operation of the Wastewater Services department through ensuring the standards of laboratory accreditation are met and through the performance of chemical and biochemical analysis on solids and wastewater samples. 

QUALIFICATIONS
Diploma of Technology in Chemistry/Environmental Studies from a recognized Institute of Technology, plus 3 - 4 years prior job-related experience in an environmental or chemistry laboratory setting. Experience and training in current ISO 17025 accreditation is an asset.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time (40 hours per week) Union position. The (2026) rate of pay is $43.50 to $45.79. The position offers an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

Building Services Worker

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a temporary part-time Building Services Worker with Recreation Services, working at our facilities within Electoral Area A (Cedar, Cassidy, South Wellington, and Yellowpoint). 
The Building Services Worker contributes to the effective operation of the Recreation Services Division through the maintenance, cleaning, and preparation of the facility and equipment at recreation facilities as required. Primary duties and responsibilities will include minor repairs, serving as the point of contact for service contractors as necessary, and assisting with the cleaning and maintenance of all areas of the facilities. 

QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a high school diploma is required, 1-2 years of job-related experience, and a Building Services Worker certificate. The successful candidate must hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License as travel to different sites is required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. 

POSITION DETAILS
This is a temporary part-time Union position (anticipated 8-16 hours per week) until December 31, 2026, with the possibility of ending early or extension based on the operational needs of the department. Occasional weekend work may be required. The (2026) rate of pay is $34.46 to $36.27 per hour, plus 12.4% in lieu of benefits, including vacation and statutory holidays, or the uninterrupted continuation of their benefits package as provided for in the Collective Agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

Landfill Attendant

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a casual Landfill Attendant with Solid Waste Services. This position will be required to work at both the Regional Landfill in Cedar (South Nanaimo) and Church Road Transfer Station in Parksville.

The Landfill Attendant contributes to the effective operation of the Solid Waste Facilities by assisting the public in depositing their waste at the Regional Landfill and Church Road Transfer Station. This position supports the Solid Waste Management Department by assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications for this position include a grade 11 education, plus one (1) year of prior job-related experience in a Solid Waste Management Facility, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

In addition, the incumbent must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License, and Level One First Aid Certificate or the ability to obtain.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a casual Union position with varied hours of work including evenings and weekends. The (2026) rate of pay is $31.70 to $33.37 per hour, plus 10.77% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Heavy Equipment Operator

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a casual Heavy Equipment Operator with Solid Waste Services. This position will be required to work at both the Nanaimo Regional Landfill in Cedar (South Nanaimo) and at the Church Road Transfer Station in Parksville.

The Heavy Equipment Operator contributes to the effective operation of the Solid Waste Facilities through the skilled operation of heavy-duty machinery to ensure that the Regional Landfill and Church Road Transfer Station are efficiently utilized according to the Solid Waste Management Plan. This position plays an integral part in maintaining a high level of waste diversion and efficiency and supports the Solid Waste department by assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, a Heavy Equipment Operator Trades Program Certificate, a valid BC Class 3 Commercial Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement, and a minimum of two (2) years of prior job related experience; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Serviceperson Operator

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a casual Serviceperson Operator with training scheduled to begin in July 2026 and onward through September 2026. Serviceperson Operators have a dynamic job as they are exposed to a variety of working conditions and people daily. Serviceperson Operators contribute to the effective operation of the Transportation Services department through the safe operation and maintenance of transit vehicles. Duties include:

  • Transporting passengers to designated bus stops along scheduled routes
  • Interacting with passengers and responding to customer inquiries
  • Pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include a grade 12 education with six (6) months of prior job-related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Transit driving experience is preferred. Previous commercial driving experience, recent experience directly interacting with the public, and mechanical aptitude are assets. Possession of a valid Class 2 BC Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement is required. Candidates are required to submit an ICBC Driver Factor Report to be reviewed.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a casual Union position, requiring employees to be available to work when needed, as outlined in the current Collective Agreement between CUPE 401 and the RDN, and based on operational requirements. Work hours vary and include evenings, weekends, and possibly split shifts. Current availability requirements are Monday to Sunday, between 4:30 a.m. to 12:45 a.m., subject to change based on operational requirements. The (2026) rate of pay is $34.46 - $38.22 per hour, depending on the task performed, plus 10.77% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Junior Leader - EA A

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) has an employment opportunity for a Junior Leader - EA A (Term Instructor). We are looking for an enthusiastic leader to assist in the delivery of quality, recreation programs in Electoral Area A (Cedar, Cassidy, South Wellington, and Yellowpoint.

Junior Leaders assist Senior and Inclusion Leaders during summer day camp programs. Responsibilities include ensuring the safety of participants; leading daily program activities including age-appropriate games, sports, arts, and crafts; assisting with the inclusion of all participants; interacting with parents and community members; maintaining program supplies, equipment, and facilities; and other related duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and general knowledge of recreation programs, day camp programs, and guiding children’s behaviour are essential. Leaders must possess and maintain a current first aid (Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid or Emergency Childcare First Aid) and CPR B or C. 
Other applicable certifications such as, High Five, NCCP, Canucks Autism Network, Physical Literacy 101, National Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, and training in nature interpretation and education, and outdoor skill development are considered assets. 

POSITION DETAILS
This position depends upon program registration and work hours vary based on need; however, general hours will be Monday to Friday from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., possible weekend hours. Start date will be July 6, 2026, and end date August 21, 2026. Program locations include various community buildings in Electoral Area A (Cassidy, Cedar, South Wellington, and Yellowpoint). The wage is $19.00 per hour.

Lifeguard/Instructor Level 1 &2

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo has an employment opportunity for a Casual Lifeguard/Instructor Level II at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach.

The successful candidate will assist in the creation, planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of aquatic programs and special events. Duties include leading and instructing a variety water-based exercise classes (i.e., Aquafit), enforcing pool rules and pool safety for the public, routine preventative maintenance and safety checks, implementation of the facility’s emergency response program, providing first aid services and supporting office staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include high school graduation, with one (1) to three (3) years of pool/aquatic related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Applicants must possess and maintain the following certifications: 

  • National Lifeguard Award (Pool Option)
  • Lifesaving Society (Swim for Life) Instructor Certification
  • CPR Certification - Basic Rescuer or CPR “C” & AED
  • Recognized First Aid Certification/WorkSafeBC Equivalency. 
  • And any one of the following: Lifesaving Instructor, Aquafit Certification (BCRPA Aquafit, CALA Aquafit Instructor), National Lifeguard Service Instructor, 
  • Lifesaving Learn to Swim Instructor, or First Aid Instructor.

Strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills. General knowledge of office skills including keyboarding, word processing and knowledge of computer applications are also required.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a casual Union position. Hours of work vary and evening and weekend work will be required. The (2026) rate of pay is $24.93 for Level 1 and $30.54 per hour for Level 2. As a casual employee you will also receive an additional 10.77% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.
