Septic Systems in the RDN
On May 31, 2005, the Sewage Disposal Regulation was repealed and replaced with the new Sewerage System Regulation. Only an authorized person can carry out maintenance, installation and site assessments on septic systems. Authorized persons are defined under the Sewerage System Regulation as: Registered Practitioners or Professionals.
The Sewerage System Regulation covers on-site wastewater systems which process sewage flow less than 22,700 litre.

Registered Practitioners
Registered Practitioners have completed an approved education and training program and are registered with the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC). Registered Practitioners are authorized to construct and maintain
Type 1 and 2 systems.

Professionals
Professionals are registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEG BC), and have been assessed for training and experience. Professionals have training in soil analysis and sewerage system construction and maintenance. They are authorized to construct and maintain, and supervise construction or maintenance of,
all types of systems.
