Curbside Collection Program Guidelines

Curbside Collection Program Guidelines The RDN introduced region-wide curbside recycling and residential garbage collection service in 1991. Green bin food and kitchen waste was added to the curbside program in October 2010, which now serves 26,500 households in the area stretching from Cassidy to Gabriola Island to Deep Bay.

The RDN garbage, recycling and food waste collection program is a mandatory service. Through its contractor, BFI Canada (formerly WSI Inc.), the RDN provides curbside collection services to single family homes to the following jurisdictions:

GARBAGE LIMITS

Basic service provides for one container of garbage collected once every two weeks. The volume of garbage in the container may not exceed 100 litres or 22 gallons in volume (larger wheeled containers may be used but not filled to the top). Weight of garbage per container is limited to 23 kilograms or 50 pounds for the safety of collection crews.

EXTRA GARBAGE TAGS

Tags for extra containers of garbage may be purchased for $2 each. A maximum of two additional containers can be put out on your scheduled collection day, provided a garbage tag is attached to each additional container. Click here for sales locations for garbage tags.

Glass No Longer Accepted in the Blue Box

With the introduction of new two-compartment collection vehicles to support the Green Bin Program, glass food and beverage containers are no longer accepted in the Blue Box. Deposit or refundable glass containers such as pop, juice, wine, beer, and liquor bottles should be returned to Return-It Centre for refund. Non-deposit glass containers such as jars and condiment bottles can be placed in your regular garbage.

SNOW AND ADVERSE WEATHER SERVICE CANCELLATIONS

Severe winter weather, such as snowy and icy conditions or roads blocked by downed trees or power lines, may cause the garbage contractor to temporarily cancel garbage and recycling collection. Please see Snow and Adverse Weather Service Cancellations for details.
